The Alpine Valleys Wine Region is one of the oldest winegrowing districts in Victoria, and indeed Australia.   Vineyards have been present here since the mid 19th Century.

A resurgence in the area occurred in 1980, when the first of the modern, commercial vineyards was established.  Formally launched as an official GI wine region in 2000, the Alpine Valleys Wine Region has the distinction of being one of Australia’s most elevated wine-producing districts.

It includes:

  • a planted area of approximately 550 Ha
  • 33 grape varieties
  • 16 wineries
  • 12 cellar doors
  • more than 60 growers

The unique sub-alpine location creates long, moderate growing conditions producing wines of great elegance, with intense fruit characters and high natural acidity.

The Alpine Valleys offers a range of unusual varietals and individual wine styles, which reflect the fresh and innovative approach of the area’s grapegrowers. Friendly cellar doors are dotted throughout the region, many offering fine regional cuisine.
