The Alpine Valleys Wine Region

The Alpine Valleys Wine Region is located in the state of Victoria in the North East Zone.  It consists of a catchment area of two major river basins that have been carved out of an old plateau extending over a large part of North East Victoria.  The two main rivers, Ovens and Kiewa, and their tributaries, Buffalo & Buckland Rivers, are part of the larger Murray River catchment area, draining into the Murray River at Yarrawonga and Wodonga respectively.  All four rivers have narrow deep valleys at the upper part of their catchment and widen into terraces and flood plains further downstream.  Vineyard elevations range from 180m in Everton to 600m in Mount Beauty.
  • The Alpine Valley region is located in a pristine alpine environment, which includes the major ski fields in Victoria.
  • Soils in the region have good structure, with above-average fertility.
  • The climatic conditions encourage a long, moderate growing period, producing high-quality grapes.
  • Chardonnany is produced for both sparkling and table wines.
  • Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz are produced at lower altitudes and Merlot at higher elevations.
  • There are  increased plantings of Italian varietals, such as Sangiovese, Barbera, Nebbiolo, Teroldego and Marzemino.
Breathtaking landscapes, premium cool climate wines, colourful food culture and striking seasonal contrasts distinguish the Alpine Valleys region. The long, moderate growing conditions produce high-quality grapes with intense fruit flavours and natural acidity. The trail of friendly cellar doors allows visitors to experience the deep, seamless reds and crisp elegant whites; fine wine goes so well with gourmet food, the perfect wine weekend.
